The Aula Hunosa of Goethermal and Biomass is located on the fourth floor of the Research Building of the University of Oviedo, in the Mieres campus.
This building, as well as the student residence on the same campus, uses geothermal energy for its air conditioning as a result of a research project that uses mine water from the nearby Pozo Barredo as a way of obtaining energy sustainably in regards to the environment. Because of this existing project it is an unbeatable place to demonstrate all the “secrets” of this source of renewable energy.
The “aula” is a multifunctional space with exhibition space where visitors can learn about the history of this energy through a series of permanent panels, and have a vision of the different renewable energies and their application in Asturias, focusing on Geothermal and Biomass energy. During the visit, you will learn what it is, how it works, its advantages and what projects are being carried out based on their uses. In the case of the first of these energy sources, Mieres has the largest facility of its kind in Spain: the Álvarez Buylla Hospital.
In the first case the facilities are located in the building´s basement plant, and they show a live and operational installation of air conditioning through geothermal energy. In the same way you can observe all the components that make up this installation (including heat pumps, drive systems, monitoring systems, etc.)
In the second case visitors will walk from the university facilities to the nearby Pozo Barredo (around 200 meters) where you can see the pumping installation as well as the control system and the heat exchanger, with an exchange power higher than 3 Megawatts, serving the Álvarez Buylla Hospital.
The Hunosa Geothermal and Biomass Classroom has an area of 130 m2 designed to promote the teaching and knowledge of these sustainable energy sources.
The exhibition is combined with interactive elements such as a touch screen, through which visitors can learn and discover the different characteristics of these energy sources through the use of videos graphics and active flow diagrams, as well as numerous models:
- A geothermal development circuit composed of a catchment area (simulating terrain), a heat delivery zone (a radiating floor) and a heat pump, alongside the circulation system
- A tubular heat exchanger, made of stainless steel, sectioned to show its design and operation
- A plate heat exchanger, partially open, to show its design and operation
As well as this, the classroom is equipped with an audio-visual system that can display different contents based on the desires of visitors
In addition, the presentation can be completed with a visit to the research center´s own facilities, as well as a visit to the Pozo Barredo. (For this tour it is necessary to confirm availability).
During the visit, the visitors will be accompanied by qualified personnel at all times.
